In August 2008 a transition team was selected to begin the process of transforming Manual Arts High School. The team consists of teachers, parents, students, administrators, community representative and staff from MLA and WestEd. The team, which had its orientation onAugust 20th, has begun laying the groundwork for change—establishing a culture of collaboration, trust, and renewal. With input from the transition team, we will begin implementing new practices and policies during the transition year, but before making significant changes we want to develop a coherent, comprehensive strategy tied to a common vision. Listed below is a tentative timeline of activities:

A: The purpose of transition team is help plan the successful transition of Manual Arts High School into the Innovation Division. Acting as a “study team,” members will have an opportunity to investigate key challenges, to learn from experts, and to talk with educators from other schools who have valuable experiences to share. The team will also seek input from and communicate regularly with Manual’s administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and students. The team will operate for approximately 8 months at which point a permanent governing body will be established.
A: According to the iDesign FAQ document (described above), schools are given autonomy in these areas:

iDesign schools must still adhere to state and federal education codes and to LAUSD’s collective bargaining agreement.

All stakeholders will also be urged to participate in online surveys. The focus groups and surveys are an important way to have your voice heard.
